Cold doesn’t get created from nowhere; heat gets removed and relocated. Inside an AC, refrigerant absorbs heat from the warm air in your room as it evaporates inside a coil, which is why the air blowing back out feels cool: the heat has literally been pulled out of it. That warmed refrigerant travels outside to the compressor and condenser, releases that same heat into the outdoor air, then cycles back to do it again. Your AC isn’t manufacturing cold. It’s running a continuous relay, carrying heat out of your home again and again for as long as it runs, which is also why the outdoor unit gets hot to the touch and needs open space around it.
Common AC Mistakes That Waste Energy
The most common myth in every household: setting the thermostat far colder than needed cools the room faster. It doesn’t. An AC cools at the same rate regardless of the target temperature; a lower setting means it runs longer before shutting off, burning more electricity to reach a temperature you didn’t need.
A dirty filter causes a quieter, costlier problem. Restricted airflow forces the compressor to work harder to deliver the same cooling through a clogged path, increasing energy use and shortening the unit’s life. Leaving a door or window cracked open while it runs does something similar: the unit keeps chasing a temperature it can never hold, because cool air leaks back out as fast as it’s made.

Most AC problems don’t start as emergencies. They start small and easy to ignore: slightly weaker airflow, a faint rattle, a filter that hasn’t been cleaned in months, and quietly worsen until the whole system works harder than it should just to keep up. Cleaning or replacing filters every few weeks during heavy use, keeping the outdoor unit clear of leaves and debris, and getting it serviced once before peak season catches small issues while they’re still cheap to fix.
